What a graft actually costs

Summary

A graft is a follicular unit carrying one to four hairs. That range is why two quotes for the same number can describe very different amounts of hair, and it is the single most common source of confusion in this market.

1. A graft is not a hair.

Hair grows in natural clusters called follicular units, most commonly of two or three hairs. A graft is one of those units, moved intact.

So 5,000 hairs and 5,000 grafts can differ by a factor of two or more. A quote that does not say which it means is not a quote you can compare, and asking the question in writing usually settles it in one message. Clinics that count hairs are not necessarily dishonest, but a comparison across the two conventions is meaningless.

2. Supply is fixed, and it is yours.

A transplant relocates follicles from the back and sides of the scalp to the top. Nothing is added. A typical donor area yields somewhere in the region of 5,000 to 7,000 grafts across a lifetime, not per session.

That makes each graft a draw on a finite account. A large first procedure that spends most of it leaves little for the loss that continues afterwards, which is why a surgeon who quotes you a smaller count than you hoped for may be protecting your options rather than limiting them.

3. What the money actually buys.

Derived from published packages, a graft works out at roughly a dollar in Turkey and about double in Thailand. No clinic in either market sells at that rate; they sell a session with a graft ceiling.

What varies between two clinics charging the same is not the follicle. It is who extracts it, how long it spends outside the body before implantation, and the angle of the channel it goes into. None of those appear on a price list, and all three decide whether the graft survives and looks right.

4. Making two quotes comparable.

Four questions turn two incomparable quotes into two comparable ones: does the count mean grafts or hairs, what technique is included at that price, what happens if the surgeon revises the count on the day, and which parts of the procedure the named surgeon performs personally.

Ask all four in writing. The answers, not the number, are the comparison.

Common questions

How much does one graft cost?

Roughly a dollar in Turkey when derived from published packages. It is a derived figure, not a rate any clinic sells at.

Is a graft the same as a hair?

No. A graft is a follicular unit of one to four hairs, so a quote in hairs and a quote in grafts are not comparable.

How many grafts do I have available?

Typically 5,000 to 7,000 across a lifetime, though it varies by donor density. A surgeon should measure yours before quoting a count.
