Technician-led surgery, and what a hair mill is

A hair transplant has three manual stages: extracting follicles, opening recipient channels, and placing grafts. In a high-volume clinic a surgeon may perform only the channel opening, or in some cases only the design, while trained technicians do the rest.

Turkish law permits this under supervision. It is the reason a market can run several thousand procedures a week at the prices it does, and it is why the cost gap against Western markets is as wide as it is.

The term is informal but the pattern is real: many patients a day, most of the work done by technicians, and a named surgeon whose involvement amounts to a signature on a plan and a handshake in the morning.

It is not automatically a bad outcome. Experienced technicians working to a good surgeon's plan produce good results routinely, and volume itself buys practice. The problem is buying it without knowing, because the price you compared was set as though you were buying something else.

"Which parts of my procedure will the named surgeon perform personally, and which will technicians perform?"

Ask it in writing, before a deposit. A clinic that answers plainly has told you what you are buying. A clinic that changes the subject, answers about supervision generally, or replies about the surgeon's qualifications rather than the day itself, has also told you something.

The follow-up worth adding: how many patients will the clinic be operating on that day.
