Insurance and hair transplants
Summary
Pattern hair loss is classified as cosmetic in every market we cover, so no public system and almost no private policy pays for it. The narrow exception is reconstruction after trauma, burns or surgery, assessed case by case.
1. Why it is not covered.
Androgenetic alopecia is not classified as a disease requiring treatment in any of the systems we looked at. It has no functional consequence a payer recognises, so the procedure sits in the same category as other elective aesthetic surgery.
That classification is why the entire market is private, and in turn why prices vary so widely between countries: there is no negotiated schedule anywhere holding them down.
2. Where cover can apply.
Reconstruction after burns, trauma, or scarring from previous surgery is a different clinical case and can attract cover. So can hair loss caused by a documented medical condition or its treatment, though this is normally assessed individually rather than granted by category.
If you are in one of these situations, the route is a referral and a documented clinical case, not a cosmetic clinic's quote. It is worth pursuing before assuming you must pay privately.
3. Travelling does not change the answer.
An uncovered procedure at home is an uncovered procedure abroad. What travelling does change is that you are outside your usual system if something goes wrong afterwards, and the follow-up care for a complication may itself be chargeable.
Some private funds offer small overseas rebates on specific procedure categories. Hair restoration is rarely among them, and checking your own policy wording is more reliable than any general statement, including this one.
4. Budget as though nothing is covered.
Because it will not be. Price the procedure, the flights, the accommodation, the medication, the time off, and the realistic possibility of a second session.
Travel insurance is a separate question with its own exclusions, covered in travel insurance for a procedure abroad.
Common questions
Is a hair transplant covered by health insurance?
Not for pattern hair loss, which every system we looked at classifies as cosmetic. Reconstruction after trauma or burns can be, case by case.
Does the NHS do hair transplants?
Only for reconstruction after burns, trauma or surgery, decided case by case. Not for pattern loss.
Will my insurer pay if I have it abroad?
If it would not pay at home, travelling does not change that. Some private funds offer small overseas rebates; check your own wording.
