Research report

Cost per graft by country

Summary

Dividing a published package by the grafts it covers gives roughly a dollar a graft in Turkey and about double that in Thailand. No clinic in these markets actually sells at that rate, which is the first thing to understand about the metric.

1. The arithmetic, shown.

Each market's published FUE package divided by the 2,500 grafts it is published against.

Derived, not quoted. No clinic sells at this rate.

2. Why the rate rewards overselling.

A flat package spread over more grafts produces a smaller per-graft number. A clinic that quotes you 4,000 grafts on the same package therefore advertises a lower rate than one that honestly quotes 2,500, while charging the same money and spending more of your donor area.

The metric rewards exactly the behaviour you least want. It is worth using for one job only: sanity checking a quote that looks unusually cheap.

3. Where per-graft pricing is genuine.

In the United Kingdom and the United States, per-graft billing is the normal form, and the rate there is a real price rather than a derived one. That is part of why the two markets are hard to compare directly: one sells a day, the other sells a unit.

In Turkey the flat package dominates. Ask which you are being quoted before comparing anything.

Common questions

What is the cost per graft in Turkey?

Around a dollar when derived from published packages. No Turkish clinic sells at that rate; they sell a session with a graft ceiling.

Is a lower price per graft better value?

Not on its own. The rate falls as the quoted count rises, so it flatters clinics that oversell graft numbers.

How do I compare two quotes properly?

Compare the total for your own graft count, and confirm what happens if the surgeon revises that count on the day.
